On this day in 1994, legendary football coach, Don Shula bested his son, David’s Cincinnati Bengals by a score of 23-7.
Known as the “Shula Bowl” this was the first time a head coaching match-up featured a father up against his son.
Widely regarded as one of the best coaches in football history, Don Shula is a Hall of Famer, a 2-time Super Bowl champion and a 4 time recipient of the NFL Coach of the Year. He also holds the record for most wins by an NFL head coach with 347.
David’s career was very different from his father’s, lasting just 5 seasons with the Bengals and posting a record of 19-52.
